Greetings from Kansas City, home of Sertoma!

My name is Carole Damon and I was recently named editor of Sertoman magazine.  I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of serving as a contributing author to Sertoman for the last two years.  With my new and expanded role, I will now have the opportunity to work even closer with Sertomans across the country to tell their inspiring stories.

Besides introducing myself, I’m also hoping to enlist your help in sharing the many wonderful things being done by Sertoma clubs in your District.  As you meet and communicate with your fellow Sertomans, I ask that you encourage them to share their news, accomplishments and suggestions for publication in the magazine.  No writing experience is required!  A brief description of the news or information a club wishes to share and a contact for further details is all that’s needed.  And, of course, the same holds true for events and news at the District level that you might wish to share with Sertoman’s national audience.

At this time, I’d also like to request your help on two specific stories I am working on for the upcoming summer issue of Sertoman.  They are:

The Canners.  Starting sometime in the late 1920’s, there was a secret society of Sertomans called the Canners, formed to help clubs re-energize their members.  We’ve located some very old documents that describe some of what the Canners did, but would like to include more details in the story.  Can you help by putting out the word to clubs in your District that we welcome any and all information or photos they might have in their archives related to this secret Sertoma society?

Sertoma Dog Breed.  Did you know there is actually a breed of dog called Sertoma?  The Sertoma is part of the American Staffordshire Terrier line and was developed by breeder Theo Rayburn sometime in the early 1960’s.  Our best information is that Mr. Rayburn lived in South Carolina, possibly in either Spartanburg or Akins.  If you or any of the clubs in your District have information about Mr. Rayburn, his connection to Sertoma or the Sertoma breed line, we’d love to hear it!

Our deadline to complete these two stories is August 8

Thanks for taking time to read this.  I hope to hear from you and look forward to working with you to tell the story of your District’s Sertomans.
